Candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC)

Natural Resources Wales

This spatial dataset contains boundaries of candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSACs) in Wales. The EC Habitats and Species Directive came into force in 1992 with the aim of conserving biodiversity by protecting a wide range of habitats and species of animals and plants. All SACs, together with Special Protection Areas (SPAs) designated under the Birds Directive to protect rare and migratory species of birds, comprise a network of sites across the EU known as 'Natura 2000'. Most SACs in Wales were first proposed in the mid 1990s and were formally designated in 2004, but a small number of further proposed designations (candidate SACs) are on-going. The candidate SACs in this dataset are sites that have been submitted to the European Commission by the Welsh and UK Governments and are awaiting formal 'adoption', which is the legal stage required before they are designated as SACs by the Welsh Ministers. Note however that candidate SACs are subject to same legal protection as designated SACs. The boundary data for the sites in this dataset were captured digitally.
